Tips For Your Audition

I have been on both sides of the table for auditions and I thought I'd take a moment here to give you some quick tips on good audition etiquette.

Obviously your talent will eventually decide what happens, but the more professional you present yourself, the better you will be remembered.

1) Take the stage. It is yours. Start out with confidence and the auditioners will have confidence in you.

2) Clearly and consisely introduce who you are, which character(s) you are doing and from which play(s). Make this introduction part of your monologe. Memorize and rehearse it.

3) DO NOT set up the monologe! 9 times out of 10 the directors already know the context your piece is in, and even if they don't your monologe should stand on its own.

4) Make sure there is an obvious break between the two characters so there is no confusion between the two.

5) Face out when you do your monologe. Talking to the wall or an empty chair draws focus away from you and directs it to whatever you are looking at.

Let me make a quick point about monologe choice. Make sure it fits your age and that you understand it! This may seem like an obvious point but I have seen many monologes done where it is painfully obvious that the actor has no idea of its context in the show. Lastly, don't worry about whether or not your monologe has been done a lot. Make it your own! Give it your flair and interpretation.

In fact, that sums up a good audition. This is your time, and it is short so seize it and make the absolute most of it!

Break a leg too! :)
